  1. New Graphics Card for your Mac Pro

Do you need to get rid of that sluggish standard Mac graphics card ? Do you want to Adobe After affects or other applications to “render” quicker? Want to make use of CUDA ? We recently had a client with the same issue, but they didn’t want to fork out huge bundles of cash for one of the Apple branded cards. There is another way : 1) Upgrade to Mountain Lion (R160) 2) Update Geforce drivers 3) Install a Geforce compatible graphics card ( GTX 570 , GTX 660, GTX 5xx, GTX 6xx) (R300 – R4000 ) 4) make a few (very safe) changes to the Max OS ( we charge R400 for this) 5) Hey presto enjoy the benefits of a faster graphics card Give us a call on 0861 003 113 if you need any Mac support in Cape Town Below is the original email to our client whilst we did the research: Sorry for the delay, I have spent the last 3 hours, getting my “MAC on” , I don’t want to recommend the wrong thing to you. In short I recommend an NVidia GTX 570 (excellent value for money and awesome performance, only down side is no boot screen) or Quadra 4000 (expensive) **You do need mountain lion for the GTX 570 ** Nice Step by step instructions, I am happy to do this all for you : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6pEmIiN4Co ** Benchmark test @ 12:30 is impressive compared the ATI he had in his system (which in itself is better than your stock GT120) Response from Cinema 4d: Cinema4D doesn’t use to GPU to render so picking a card for After Effects might actually be a better choice. “Rendering utilizes the CPU and RAM. If the Project fits completely within memory, processing power is the only hardware factor in rendering. If the Project doesn’t fit into memory, hard drive speed has some effect due to virtual memory swapping. Graphics cards won’t affect rendering speed, but will speed up the redraw in the Viewport, enabling you to work more interactively with complex Projects.” After effects : http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/2/1019643#1019643 Basically the 570 is best value for money. You cant buy the 5xx series cards any more as they have been replaced by the 6xx series. Nvidia cards (require Mountain lion and don’t provide boot screen) Locally: I can get a a refurbished GTX570 with 2 years warranty for about R3k Or a new GTX 660ti for about R4500 From UK: Refurbished : R3k (so not worth it  ) New: GTX 660ti R3800 or GTX 670 (the equivalent of the 570) – R5200 Apple “official” Cards: Nvidia Quadra 4000 (apparently amazing for 3d) – New (UK): R8500 – Refurbished (UK) : R4500 ATI/AMD : 5770/5870 – Can get these, but research suggests they make no difference really to after effects as only Nvidia can utilize CUDA)

The line may look similar to this: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS="Windows Server 2003, Standard" /fastdetect /3GB /NoExecute=OptOut add the /PAE switch: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS="Windows Server 2003, Standard" /fastdetect /3GB /Execute /PAE Reboot your server.
